The Health Improvement Foundation of Cameroon (HIF-CAM) is a community-based nonprofit organization incorporated under Cameroon law in 2003. Its mission is to: "Provide quality and affordable healthcare services to the rural communities deprived of access to healthcare services, aimed at saving and changing their lives". Most of the rural communities we serve have been abandoned to themselves - with no healthcare facilities, no clean water, no power supply and very poor road network. Everyday a child dies of Acute Malaria, Acute Diarrhea Disease, Pneumonia, Malnutrition, etc. At full term many pregnant women bleed to death in the hands of crude birth attendants. Recently, in April 2022, an outbreak of Cholera occurred in Limbe Subdivision, claiming 157 lives in many villages (Ref: Report of the Delegation of Public Health, Buea). Owing to the absence of healthcare facilities in most of the rural communities about 80% of the population have resorted to indigenous traditional treatment - which is ineffective. The other 20% who prefer modern medical treatment must trek 12-15 kilometers to the nearest health center. The high death rate in four rural communities, including the high death toll of the Cholera outbreak, has prompted HIF-CAM to intervene in the four villages - hardest hit by illness and death. HIF-CAM, in collaboration with community leaders of these communities, has conceived and planned an innovative health project - the Motowo Rural Health Project (MRHP) - aimed at providing quality and affordable healthcare services to 15,000 underserved inhabitants of the four villages. We have competent and experienced project personnel but lack the financial resources to implement the project. The big, impactful project will entail the training of healthcare workers and the construction and equipping of an integrated health center - to provide curative, preventive and maternal and child health services. The project is estimated to cost $253,000 USD. Dear valued volunteers, this is where kind and human-centered people like you come in. With your support we can reach this goal. HIF-CAM and the communities will be highly appreciative if you (the volunteers) fundraise for us - from your families, friends, donors, partners and your peer groups. This appeal goes especially to our beloved Gen Z group of volunteers. You could even create your own fundraiser on our behalf - setting your own goal to attain. Create yours and keep us informed. The money you donate will be used to: sponsor the training of 10 health workers ( nurses, midwives, laboratory technicians and primary healthcare workers); purchase building materials for the construction of the health center; compensate project personnel; purchase medical equipment, furnishings, office supplies and essential medicines for the health center; and provide facilities and resources for maternal and child health services and provide transport for outreach preventive activities. As members of the VolunteerMatch services, let us work together to help these deprived communities and also help VolunteerMatch and HIF-CAM to attain their respective missions. HIF-CAM counts on your generous support and will definitely not forget you when recruiting volunteers to come to Cameroon for the project execution. Thank you very much for your time. We are open to a longstanding partnership. Visit our website www.hif-cam.org (still under reconstruction) to learn more about us. Yours warmly, Chief Lewindia Nicholas, Executive Director at HIF-CAM.

Mission Statement

The Health Improvement Foundation of Cameroon (HIF-CAM) is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization incorporated under Cameroon law in 2003. Its head office is located in Limbe, in the Southwest Region of Cameroon. The organization is committed to achieving the following mission: "We provide quality and affordable healthcare services to everyone in the rural communities deprived of healthcare access, making sure no one dies of disease". Our vision of a better world is for everybody to attain a level of health that enables him or her to realize his or her dreams. Our organization operates on the core values of compassion, innovation, collaboration, social justice, gender equality, environmental sustainability, transparency, and empowerment. We are driven by a deep sense of empathy for the poor marginalized rural communities owing to the injustice of healthcare inaccessibility, resulting in the rising death rate, especially among the under-fives.

Description

Programs and Services:
(a) Trains primary health workers (selected to serve in deprived communities.
(b) Constructs and equips health units in deprived communities
(c) Engages qualified health personnel and volunteers (including doctors, nurses, midwives laboratory technicians, etc.) to provide quality and affordable healthcare services.
(d) Empower the rural poor, especially women, in agriculture and business.
Restructuring:
Owing to the devastating socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the socio-political crisis currently plaguing Cameroon the board of directors restructured the organization in April 2021 into two divisions: the health division - Forfa’ah Medical Services (FMS) and the business division - Forfa’ah Social Enterprise (FSE) - the aim being to contain the crisis (both financially and programmatically). HIF-CAM remains the parent organization of both entities.
Forfa’ah Social Enterprise (FSE), the business entity, will research and provide innovative solutions to global health and poverty challenges. Its operations will start soon. Right now Forfa’ah Medical Services (FMS) concentrates its resources mainly on achieving HIF-CAM’s mission above.
Achievements:
Ten rural health projects (comprising the training of over 150 primary healthcare workers, the construction and equipping of 8 health centers, and 75 primary health posts) were executed prior to the restructuring of HIF-CAM.
