ORGANIZATION: Hearts and Hands

Just imagine for a moment that your parent, a spouse, or someone you care deeply for couldn’t take care of themselves anymore. You are their only support and responsible for their grocery shopping, scheduling appointments, and transportation. How would that impact your professional career? How might that impact your personal life? You love them and they come first! But to be the best support, they need to exhale and breathe.... As a volunteer you can from a friendship and help a neighbor exhale.

Hearts & Hands is looking for volunteers to provide support to care recipients in the program and help the team ensure their needs are met during the four-hour program. What would you do as a volunteer?

  • Spend time and socialize with an older adult guest (participant)
  • Participate in arts and crafts and other projects together
  • Enjoy a free lunch with the group
  • Ensure guest safely navigates to restrooms, and other spaces within the building
  • Assist with serving lunch and/or cleanup

Give back to your community! Your volunteerism can help two neighbors at once! You’ll form a wonderful friendship with an older adult by engaging with them in structured activities and socialization. Meanwhile, you’ll be helping their loved one an opportunity to exhale to catchup on their errands, build their caregiver toolkit, and develop a support network.

Mission Statement

Hearts and Hands connects caring volunteers with older adults by providing transportation, in-home supports, and caregiver respite to uphold their dignity, improve their quality of life, and enhance their ability to live in their home of choice and to assist their primary caregivers.

Description

Hearts and Hands is a non-profit organization that matches caring, reliable volunteers with older community members who have essential needs, like transportation, to ensure that they can continue living independently. The organization, founded in 2003, provides services to underserved areas in Western New York. Our program is a best efforts and no charge delivery of services.

Our focus is on services that enhance nutritional status, foster socialization, increase physical activity, and provide access to medical, dental and other health services. If we cannot provide a requested service, we will refer that request to an agency that is able to meet the need. We work closely with the Alzheimer Association, Meals on Wheels, the Erie Co. Dept. of Senior Services, the local first responders and other area service providers. Currently, the organization serves Erie and Eastern Niagara Counties.
