A Hospice Bereavement Support Volunteer Opportunity

VITAS Bereavement volunteers make a real difference in the emotional and spiritual stability of our patients’ families. Trained bereavement volunteers may assist our bereavement team by being assigned families to call or visit, asked to help organize community support groups and memorial services, or do bereavement mailings; all with the support and guidance of the VITAS bereavement team.

In addition, Volunteers can work remote by becoming a Bereavement Telephone Volunteer. VITAS BTAP (Bereavement Telephone Assurance Program) volunteers make phone calls to bereaved family members after a hospice patient's death. These short phone calls go a long way in making a difference in the lives of those coping with grief. Use your compassion, your listening skills, and your time, enhanced by no-cost training and coaching from VITAS, to give back to your community and strengthen your resume. Hours are flexible and calls can be made from your dorm room, apartment, or home. Basic computer skills are required, and the ability to use the internet.

This is an exceptional opportunity for those studying spiritual care vocations.

VITAS Volunteer orientation is provided free of charge to help you learn the skills required to be a hospice volunteer. Additional training is provided about the stages of grief, how to communicate and encourage the bereaved, and how to recognize complicated grief. Volunteers work with the support of VITAS’ manager of volunteers, bereavement manager and/or chaplain to provide a caring presence to a grieving individual. Time and dates are ongoing and flexible.
