Whom We Serve

Whom We Serve

  • LVMont specializes in teaching adults whose literacy skills are below the 6 th grade level or who have limited conversational English skills, especially those who cannot or will not attend classes due to fear, embarrassment, past failure in school, or difficulties with child care, transportation or scheduling.
  • LVMont’s students are from the United States and 18 countries from every continent.

What We Do

  • We recruit volunteers and provide them with 18 hours of free training in either basic literacy or ESOL.
  • We recruit, interview and assess students prior to matching and annually.
  • Volunteer tutors provide 2 hours per week of free, confidential and individualized instruction.
  • We provide professional support to tutors through monthly contact, personal appointments, open houses, additional trainings, a quarterly newsletter, an annual recognition event, and re-assessment to monitor progress.
  • We conduct two free 20-hour citizenship classes per year, including materials.
  • We conduct free conversation circles online and at libraries in our service area where participants can improve their fluency and confidence in conversational English.
Our Impact
  • Literate adults find better jobs, start new careers, and become more confident, self-reliant members of their community.
  • Our students become proficient readers and speakers, enabling them to read to their children, and communicate with schools and doctors.
  • ESOL students and graduates of the citizenship classes become US citizens.
