Every spring and fall, Urbana Champaign Books to Prisoners holds a large benefit book sale to raise money for its mission. That mission is to provide books to people incarcerated in Illinois at no charge to them, and to promote education and awareness of incarceration and prisons.

At these sales, we sell thousands of gently-used books donated to us by the community, that are over and above what we can use. Some are not allowed into the prisons, some are not requested by prisoners, some are too heavy for us to ship, and some we already have multiples of.

We need lots of volunteers on the day before the sale, to help us arrange thousands of books in a shopper-friendly way. While volunteers can work all day if they like, we have arranged the work into two hour shifts--two hours give or take.

You will enjoy this work if you love books, are familiar with book categories and genres, enjoy alphabetizing, enjoy working with others, and are okay being on your feet for two hours or so.

If you like helping with something big for the sake of providing people in our prisons the books they long to read and the subjects they want to study, this opportunity will be very rewarding and a lot of fun for you.

In exchange for your help, you may pre-shop the sale (cash only), and there will be refreshments.

About IMC - Books to Prisoners

Location:

202 S. Broadway Ave, P.O. Box 515, Urbana, IL 61802, US

Mission Statement

The mission of U-C Books to Prisoners is to provide books to incarcerated people in Illinois at no cost to them, and to promote education about incarceration and prisons in our community.

Description

UC Books to Prisoners is an Urbana, Illinois based project providing books to people in prison in Illinois by mail as well as through the Champaign county jail library which we operate.

We are an 18 year-old community-powered and volunteer-run organization with a number of easy ways for you to get involved. No experience is required (but it helps if you like to read) and whether you have an hour a month or would like to volunteer more often, you are invited to to work with us.

Our volunteers interact with the incarcerated by reading their letters, selecting books from our collection of donated materials and sending books in response to their requests. We also staff a lending library in the Champaign County jail. If you would prefer to work behind the scenes, we can also utilize your unique skills coordinating book drives, fund raising, tech-support, packing boxes, data-base work, developing programs to educate and engage the community around issues of books and prisons, staffing our book sales, and more.
