The English in Action (EiA) program matches non-native speakers with native English-speaking volunteers for one-to-one conversation practice. EiA is always looking for friendly new tutors and volunteer leaders.

As a Volunteer Leader you will lead volunteers and new immigrant students and manage their conversations. Using the break out rooms feature of Zoom you will be creating rooms for both group discussion and then the pair's one on one conversations during a 2 hour session. You will pair new tutors and students together and keep track of their participation. You can also have your own student for one to one conversation as well! As an EiA Volunteer Leader you will make a difference in your community, meet new people, share your culture and experiences and learn about other cultures.

Volunteer Leaders need no formal teaching background or training. They need technical skill with Zoom, an interest in other cultures and the willingness to help a newcomer. We provide training and materials. Time commitment: minimum 2 hours per week plus ongoing email communications with staff and participants.

English in Action may mean the beginning of a lifelong interest in a particular area of the world, or even a deeper understanding of one's own culture.

English in Action (EiA), in connection with the Andrew Romay New Immigrant Center (ARNIC), is a program of the English-Speaking Union of the United States.

Mission Statement

The ESU celebrates English as a shared language to foster global understanding and good will by providing educational and cultural opportunities for students, educators, new immigrants, and members.

Description

The ESU, a non-profit, non-political organization. English in Action and the Andrew Romay New immigrant Center are two of many ESU programs.

English in Action (EiA) helps newcomers to the United States gain fluency and confidence in conversational English by pairing them with volunteer tutors for weekly conversation sessions. In addition to practicing the language without the fear of making mistakes, English in Action students learn about life in this country and teach their conversation partners about their own lives, experiences and customs.

The Andrew Romay New Immigrant Center (ARNIC), is a FREE program that helps recent immigrants participate fully in American society. ARNIC members enjoy exclusive access to the Center's events, activities and classes throughout the year.
