Recruiting Organization: Ohlone Humane Society Wildlife Rehabilitation Center

The Ohlone Humane Society Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Newark is now accepting applications for new volunteers. We are a non-profit that has been serving the Tri Cities for over 25 years taking in injured and orphaned wildlife and rehabilitating them so they can return to the wild. This opportunity is a wonderful and rewarding introduction to wildlife rehabilitation and a valuable experience for anyone interested in pursuing work with wildlife.

The wildlife at our Newark facility requires consistent care throughout the 8-month busy season between March and October. We ask for your commitment to volunteer at least one 4-hour shift on the same day and time each week, 3 times a month. We are open every day. Shifts are Monday to Sunday 9:00am to 1:00pm. Please note that shift times could change during the season to meet the needs of our patients.

Our orientation and training classes will begin in March to April. Major responsibilities include preparing species-specific meals for each patient, cleaning enclosures, laundry, and dishes. A significant portion of time is spent cleaning enclosures to maintain a high standard of healthcare.

We help so many different species of animals, it’s too many to mention here! Some of our recent patients are:

raccoons, squirrels, opossums, skunks, foxes

● California native birds of all kinds,

● waterfowl like egrets, ducks, geese, and herons

● many species of raptors such as barn owls, great horned owls, and hawks

Requirements

-Be at least 18 years of age.

-Commit to at least one 4-hour shift on the same day and time each week, 3 times a month.

-You must have the ability to stand, kneel, bend over, twist, and occasionally lift 25lbs.

-Willingness to clean, messy animal enclosures.

-Be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. You will need to provide your vaccination card for validation.

-Complete the OHSWRC application process. Submit your application here.

-Attend a 90 minute orientation class online through Google Meet.

Once your application is approved, we will send you a list of orientation class dates.

Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date on how we’re making a difference together, every day, in the lives of animals.
