The YWCA Aunt Betty's Place is an on-site children's center that serves children living in our housing in Lynnwood. The program offers a supervised, caring environment where ethnically-diverse children can participate in recreational and educational activities in a safe space.
We are seeking volunteers fluent in both Spanish and English to help our Spanish speaking youth practice and strengthen their English.
We strive to provide our youth with consistency. Thus, we seek volunteers who are interested in supporting our programming at least once per week for at least four months. Having a regular, ongoing presence in the program helps volunteers build strong relationships with our youth. We are seeking volunteers during the following times:
- Monday: 11:00am-2:00pm
- Tuesday: 11:00am-2:00pm
- Wednesday: 11:00am-2:00pm
- Thursday: 11:00am-2:00pm
- Friday: 11:00am-2:00pm
Duties
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor to teens
- Prepare and facilitate activities
- Greet kids when they enter the space
- Engage kids in conversation and activities
- Promote positive peer interactions
- Provide one-on-one and small group assistance
- Redirect negative behavior and resolve conflicts
- Maintain a positive attitude and remain patient
- Help prepare and clean space
Desired Skills:
- Experience working with youth in tutoring or mentoring role
- Experience working with communities of color
- Ability to motivate and provide direction, as well as excitement for teaching or tutoring
- Patience and understanding of barriers faced by youth with multiple life transitions and how this affects their focus, learning, behavior, and consistency
- Must be able to support and affirm youth with diverse cultures, racial and ethnic identities, religious beliefs, sexual orientations, abilities, and countries of origin
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Able to make a four month commitment
All volunteers are required to participate in our virtual orientation. Continued coaching will be provided by supervisor and on-site program staff.
