Girls' Basketball Coach - Newark

Save to Favorites

SoulPhamm is a new, nonprofit organization that provides sports and arts activities for young people in New Jersey and New York City. You can learn more about us by visiting

We are a brand-new program and hope to begin tryouts in mid-March for boys and girls ages 12 to 15 (separated by age). We strongly prefer candidates who are LOCAL (or easily commutable) to Newark. We are hoping to secure a female coach for our girls' team, but welcome men to apply as coaches too.

Practice will be every Saturday at the Newark YMCA Gymnasium (600 Broad Street, Newark, NJ). We have the space available from 1pm to 3:30pm. Generally 1pm-2pm is a workout for ALL of our athletes and artists (cheerleaders, steppers, majorettes). The coach can arrive at 2pm, and then practice from 2pm to 3:30pm.

The team plays every year in our end-of-season memorial basketball game in honor of Coach Lou Herrera on Saturday, June 24th. Coaches can work together with the Director to plan other experiences for the team (scrimmages, tournaments, etc.). The "season" officially ends with that game, but coaches who have the time, can elect to work with their team over the summer.

Coaches must be able to work with players of all skill levels. While coaching experience is not required, the potential coach must evidence significant skill and knowledge of the game (so experience as a player on any level is required). Please share your coaching or basketball experience when you reach out.

No phone calls please.

About SoulPhamm Inc

613 Washington Boulevard, Suite 1129, Jersey City, NJ 07310, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of young people by providing unique artistic and athletic experiences and performances, and to assist them in achieving the highest standards of professionalism through the development of discipline, skill, confidence, cooperation, leadership, responsibility and character.

Our vision is to promote virtue, equity, unity, justice, faith, charity and a sense of common purpose and brotherhood among all people with an emphasis on the development and advancement of young people through education, athletics, service and the arts.

SoulPhamm was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in the state of New Jersey on June 25, 2021 and is the "birth-child" of Coach Luis ("Lou") and Dr. Leisa Herrera ("Mz. Doc"). The organization exists to provide training to young people in a variety of sports and performing arts and unique opportunities to display those talents through competition and performance. By integrating mentoring, life skills, opportunities for community service and academic enrichment to the athletic/artistic program, we help make our scholar-athletes as well-rounded as possible, capable of meeting and overcoming any challenges they are faced with. Although Coach Lou passed away suddenly in January 2021, the official launch of SoulPhamm was held on June 26, 2021, which coincided with his birthday weekend. SoulPhamm will recognize its own founding, as well as the achievements of our young people every year on the fourth Saturday of June, as a tribute to the life and legacy of Coach Lou.
