Pink Space Theory offers Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) programming to inspire and build STEAM skills for the next generation. It was created to help close the gender and race equity and equality gaps in the STEAM community. Pink Space Theory aims to engage, expose, and empower youth, especially girls, with STEAM learning experiences to prepare them for their future career paths and passions.

Pink Space Theory energizes students through problem-based hands-on activities that stimulate critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity in the Washington DC Metro area.

A Unique Opportunity:

Use your financial and accounting skills to help us build skills to spark interest and excitement for STEAM careers! Pink Space Theory is a small-but-impactful Northern Virginia nonprofit. We are seeking a volunteer Treasurer to join our Board of Directors. We have an annual operating budget of under $150,000.

The Treasurer has the responsibility of overseeing the management and reporting of the organization’s finances. Pink Space Theory relies on a bookkeeping and accounting firm to handle bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, taxes, and tax reporting. The Treasurer’s role is to oversee and interface with these entities, and to be the resource of financial matters for the Pink Space Theory Board of Directors and President.

Responsibilities
  • Audit and assist with reconciling monthly expenses and income in Quickbooks, the bank, and other accounts.
  • Communicate monthly and annual financial statements to senior management.
  • Lead the annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the President; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and produce monthly budgets versus actual reports.
  • Assist the President with the development and presentation of the annual report.
  • Coordinate with tax professionals to generate the organization’s tax required forms (990 and forms for 1099 NEC).
  • Complete state charity registration forms annually.
  • Present or co-present the organization's financial statement to the board of directors.
  • Help along with the President, keep the board informed of critical financial events, trends, and issues relevant to the organization.
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.
  • Oversee audit and tax functions, coordinate activities with outside audit/accounting firms, and review firms' performance.
  • Produce financial reports for organization and other funder grants; maintain shared grant reporting calendar due dates and submissions, including all required financial deliverables as stated per grant awards and contracts.
Qualifications:
  • Experience with financial planning / budgeting / analysis, Quickbooks, and excel required.
  • Experience with grant writing and reporting required.
  • Non-profit experience required.

Time commitment is about 5 hours a month, sometimes a bit more, mostly working from home. Bi-annual meetings via Zoom are usually scheduled on weekends. Work is done from home; Pink Space Theory maintains no physical office.

  • Working knowledge of Quickbooks
  • Ability to learn new skills/concepts quickly
  • Any experience or background in Finance or Accounting
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Problem solving ability
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills
  • Must be a great teammate and able to work collaboratively
  • Ability to work efficiently under tight timelines with a positive attitude
