Purpose/Description

The Volunteer Coordinator position will support The Learning Center’s literacy project in recruiting and retaining volunteer tutors for adult learners in Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency, and English as a Second Language classes. The Learning Center serves adults from the North Lawndale and Little Village communities of Chicago. We believe adults can learn, have a right to quality education, and that education is liberating.

Reports to: Executive Director and Program Coordinator

Location: 2153 S. Millard Avenue, Chicago, IL 60623

Office hours: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM in person Monday-Thursday, 9:00 AM-1:00 PM virtual Fridays

Hours: 20/week. Part time. $8,400 living stipend plus additional benefits.

Primary Responsibilities

o Manage recruitment efforts for volunteer tutors.

o Promote volunteering through publicity campaigns, strategies, and/or events.

o Ensure tutors are properly trained in adult literacy and placed into the appropriate classroom. o Coordinate and schedule volunteer intake interviews and training sessions.

o Maintain schedule and coordination of all volunteers.

o Responsible for collecting and organizing all volunteer forms and applications.

o Maintain volunteer files and track/enter tutor hours into online database.

o Maintain contact with volunteers to increase engagement and retention.

o Plan and organize volunteer appreciation events, including recognizing individual volunteer milestones such as birthdays and anniversaries.

o Serve as agency representative at community events and fairs to publicize volunteer opportunities. o Plan tutoring sessions and provide small group and one-on-one literacy tutoring to adult learners. o Conduct basic skills and literacy assessments.

o Track learner progress through regular assessments and submit reports.

o Assist students with employment-related services (i.e. job search, job applications, resume writing, etc.)

Qualifications

• Ability to maintain confidentiality

• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher)

• Proficient in social media

• Strong organizational skills

• Respectful and welcoming attitude

• Willing and competent to work with a diverse population

• Ability to multi-task calmly

• Excellent communication skills

• Experience in managing or coordinating projects

• Bilingual in English and Spanish (preferred)
