About USS Midway Museum

910 N. Harbor Drive, SAN DIEGO, CA 92101, US

Mission Statement

Preserve the historic USS Midway and the legacy of those who serve, inspire and educate future generations, and entertain our museum guests.

There are a few opportunities for assisting the USS Midway Museum as a volunteer for a single day or a short period of time. First, we do modified FOD Walks. These are named after traditional military FOD Walks where sailors physically inspect and clean the flight deck of any foreign objects that could cause damage to the aircraft or personnel when blown by rotors or sucked into engines. On the Midway our FOD Walks are the cleaning out of the pad eyes, which collect a lot of dirt from everyday activity on the ship.

Next we do TAD Walks (Temporary Additional Duty), which is a general cleaning routine of all of the tour routes that are open to the public during museum hours. This includes dusting and wiping down of the walls, cleaning of glass and plastic barriers and making "discrepancy reports" of any areas that need attention from the ship's engineering department. This includes lights that are out and areas that are excessively worn or damaged or in need of painting.

Finally, there are other projects that involve more significant labor and require the supervision of our Engineering and Ship Restoration personnel. These are available only on an "as needed basis." Examples include the restoration of the USS Recruit and the cleaning of aircraft.

FOD and TAD Walks are single day events; restoration work more often than not requires a more significant time commitment. In all cases, we prefer that volunteer groups consist of from 10 to 20 people, but we can be flexible.

The normal routine is to meet on the pier in front of the ship at 7:45 am, board the ship, receive instructions and begin the project by 8 am and complete work by 10 am. Major projects have their own timeframes. After the work detail, a docent will be available to provide a short talk about the Midway and answer your group's questions. Then the group is dismissed but invited to spend as much time as they wish on the ship as our guests for the day.
