Vision IN-School Orientation Wednesday, February 8th or February 9th, from 10 AM to Noon. RSVP to Shirley Egbert at egbert@jsei.ucla.edu.

Vision IN-School
is a unique science enrichment program for 4th - 6th-grade students. The program curriculum initially developed by the National Eye Institute (NEI) continues to receive positive reviews from students, teachers, and volunteers’ year-after-year.

The Center for Community Outreach and Policy, a volunteer arm of UCLA Stein Eye Institute, provides volunteer guest speakers to involve students in a lively 60 to 90-minute session covering:

  • Anatomy of the eye
  • Mechanics of vision
  • Problems that interfere with vision
  • Eye health and safety, including injury prevention

The program provides interactive learning for the young audience, with a bovine cow eye dissection demonstration. We believe this program empowers children by giving them knowledge about how their eyes work and providing tangible ways to protect their sight. Eye injury is the leading cause of blindness in children in the United States.

We take active measures to ensure all volunteers are expertly trained and to have a positive impact on the children. Volunteers can participate as a presenter or bovine cow eye dissectors. In addition, volunteers provide their transportation to the elementary schools. Carpooling is available from the Stein Eye Institute upon request.

Description

The UCLA Stein Eye Institute’s Center for Community Outreach and Policy, under the direction of Dr. Anne L. Coleman, is dedicated to the principle that all individuals deserve the best vision attainable. Building upon the Institute’s long tradition of community service and leadership at the interface of ophthalmology and public health, the Center conducts vital research in public-health ophthalmology through the UCLA Center for Eye Epidemiology. It provides high-impact community-based services, such as the UCLA Mobile Eye Clinic. The Preschool Vision Screenings and Vision In-School programs of the Center are generously underwritten by the Jules and Doris Stein UCLA Support Group.
