Neighbors come to BakerRipley to learn skills so they can continue their education and get better jobs. Some students in Adult Education need help to prepare for their High School Equivalency or GED tests and gain basic computer skills for jobs and education. The GED Information Session Volunteer is a vital role that helps our adult neighbors learn about BakerRipley programs and classes, and ensures our community members are confident in their decision to register for classes and ready to succeed!
What will this achieve?
GED Information Session Volunteers give neighbors the opportunity to move forward in their academic and career goals.
What will I do in this role?
The GED Information Session Volunteer:
- Creates a welcoming and informative introduction to BakerRipley and the Adult Education program.
- Uses a presentation and script to explain introductory information about General Education Degree test prep classes, either via Zoom or in person.
- Provides feedback to the volunteer supervisor.
What do I need to be successful in this volunteer role?
You can succeed in this role and have a lasting, positive impact on the lives of the adults you assist without any formal public speaking experience. We will train and support you! To enjoy your volunteer experience and to be successful, you need to:
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity, foster mutual respect, and interact professionally and warmly with neighbors who come from diverse backgrounds.
- Show patience with students who have low literacy and computer skills.
- Use active listening skills and Plain Language.
- Become comfortable using Zoom or other online meeting software.
The Information Session Volunteer must complete these online trainings:
- Principles of Adult Learning (3 hours)
- Plain Language (1 hour)
- Basic Computer and Zoom (10 - 30 minutes, as needed)
- Observe at least one Information Session (1 hour)
- Practice the script and confidently complete at least one practice session (1 hour)
What’s the time commitment?
We hold two GED Information Sessions a month and they generally run about 1 hour each. We ask that you come at least 15 minutes before each session. Once you complete training, you may sign up for individual Information Sessions.
Where and when will I volunteer?
This role can be fully remote or in person at our East Aldine, Gulfton/Sharpstown, Pasadena, or Ripley House campuses. GED Information Sessions are on alternating Tuesdays and Fridays, at either 9AM or 6PM.
What support will I receive?
The BakerRipley Volunteer Supervisor will support you.

BakerRipley has a rich history in building communities that work since its early days when it was part of the Settlement House movement in the early 1900′s.
