Feeling intimidated? Don’t! We frequently have potential classroom aides ask if we can use people who have never taught before, or people who don’t speak a different language, and the answer is always, "Yes! Of course, we can!" What we need from our classroom aides is patience and a willingness to learn alongside your student. In addition, we do ask that our classroom aides fulfill these more specific requirements:

• Commit to tutor for a minimum of six months.

• Devote three or more hours per week to tutoring.

• Have a high-school diploma or its equivalent.

• Pass a criminal background check.

• Have current clearances.

• Pass a TB test.

• Read and sign IU5 policies.

• Be willing to participate in ongoing professional development.

Volunteer classroom aides work in coordination with our classroom instructors to provide one-on-one or small group assistance to give students the academic and workplace skills necessary to transition into employment, post-secondary education, or training.
