Assistant Director, Canine Rescue (Hybrid Volunteer Position)
At Dallas Pets Alive, we rescue and help the healthy and treatable pets at greatest risk for euthanasia at our partner shelters. We also provide assistance and resources to pet owners having problems so significant that they need to surrender their pets to a shelter. We are looking for professional and passionate volunteers to help us make North Texas a No-Kill community.
In our rescue program, we focus on:
- Rescuing healthy and treatable pets at North Texas shelters at the greatest risk of being euthanized
- Reducing owner surrender through our Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS) program
- Opening kennel space by transporting pets to partners in the U.S. and Canada in need of adoptable animals
- Challenging the way our community views rescue animals. We believe that adoption is not only the right thing to do but THE thing to do!
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The Assistant Director, Canine Rescue will focus on the canine needs of our North Texas Shelter partners.
SUMMARY: Our organization is run mostly by volunteers and all of our pets are housed by dedicated foster families throughout North Texas. The Assistant Rescue Director- Canine will work closely with our rescue partners with their canine needs. They will coordinate with the Rescue Admin’s and Evaluators on what dogs or puppies need to be networked for fosters. This individual will keep the rescue team, and Animal Operations team informed of canine needs and areas of focus for our shelter partners. This role is both a remote and in person volunteer role.

Reports To: Rescue Director
Location: Hybrid
- Hybrid/Virtual - Located in Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, mostly virtual, but able to be in-person as needed.
Works with: DPA! Leadership, Rescue team, Shelter partners
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Providing leadership and guidance to Rescue team members
- In person evaluations of dogs at one of DPA’s shelter partners twice a month
- Helping to maintain a positive relationship with DPA partner shelters
- Attend shelter partner meetings, if availability allows
- Correspond with shelters about non-tag related questions including medical inquiries and paperwork requests
- Networking urgent dogs to Trello and FB page as needed
- Attending DPA leadership meetings (virtual), if availability allows
CONTACTS WITH OTHERS: Correspondence with rescue team, DPA shelter partners, DPA Leadership, and DPA volunteers
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Preferred:
- Knowledge of canine behavior
- Required:
- At least 18 years of age
- Associates or Bachelor's Degree at an accredited college or university
- Google Drive, Excel, Word and PowerPoint experience
- Ability to assess data and report on findings
- Must embrace the mission of Dallas Pets Alive and be able to passionately motivate donors to invest in our life saving mission
- Be organized and exhibit "follow through" on tasks and goals
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and maintain professional level correspondence at all times
- Display a fun, energetic and positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense and good listening ability
- Maintain emotional control under stress and conduct oneself at a high level of professionalism when working with others
- Must exhibit strong communication skills and compassion for individuals considering surrender of their pet(s)
- Must not have conflicting associations with similar non-profit organizations or business(es) related to animal welfare
Dallas Pets Alive! Musts:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to maintain professional level correspondence at all times
- A motivational, can-do attitude to represent DPA in a positive manner to our supporters and the general public
- A problem-solving mindset to handle and diffuse challenging situations in a professional manner
- A love for animals and dedication to the cause of animal welfare
Time Commitment: Approximately 5-10 hours per week

*At this time, we do not accept court-ordered service hours nor track community service hours.
*Our organization does not currently have an established office location, however in March 2023 DPA opened up an Adoption Container.
