The success of Camp Brave Trails is due, in large part, to the quality of the staff we hire. We are looking for exceptional LGBTQ+ and allied adults to join our extraordinary team up in the magical mountains of Brave Trails. Our amazing staff will support our mission of connecting LGBTQ+ youth to their people, place, and passion!

Brave Trails is looking for a dedicated Cabin Counselors to join our 2023 Unicorn Crew! Volunteers serve as a Cabin Counselor for 8-10 youth between the ages of 12-17. In addition, Cabin Counselors will help us lead fun and innovative programming for our youth.

CABIN COUNSELOR DUTIES

  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned
  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth
  • Actively supervise and engage with campers ensuring their safety and basic needs are met throughout the summer
  • With your co-counselor, develop and consistently deliver quality, age appropriate cabin activities throughout the entire camping session
  • Provide a safe space for campers to explore their identity and become better versions of themselves
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior

PROGRAM LEAD DUTIES

  • Develop and deliver free choice programs that are appropriate for the age and ability of campers
  • Write 3-5 lesson plans regarding your focus area, additionally adding elements of leadership development
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment
  • Free Choice Focus Areas: Drag, Poetry, Photography, Film, Dance, Outdoor Adventure, Archery, Arts & Crafts, Gayming, Cafe BT, Fashion, Low Ropes, Music, Sports, Yoga, Cooking, or Create Your Own!
PROGRAM LEAD DUTIES
  • 21+ years old (unless applicant graduated the UJL program + completed their growth year)
  • Must be able to pass a government background check, reference check, and drug test
  • Must be fully vaccinated from COVID19
  • Ability to work long days while maintaining a positive attitude
  • Must be in good physical and mental health
  • Requires 10 hours of pre-camp planning with Programs Director

VOLUNTEER + ROOM & BOARD

  • This is a volunteer position with a full session commitment (13 days).
  • Volunteers will be provided housing for the full 13 day commitment.
  • Volunteers will be provided meals during camp sessions and staff training periods (3 high quality meals a day, plus unlimited access to snacks & coffee).
  • Volunteers will be provided breaks throughout the session.
    • Daily: 2 hour break
    • Mid-Session: 6 hour break

Volunteers will be provided $200 to be utilized for travel and training assistance. Brave Trails does not cover any additional transportation/travel costs. Staff members will be able to park their personal vehicles safely on campus throughout the session.

We offer accredited summer camps, backpacking trips, family camps, mental health services, meet-up groups, and year-round leadership programming. All of our programs focus on helping LGBTQ+ youth find what they need most to thrive: their people, their place, and their passion. Nothing makes us more proud than seeing our youth take the skills they gain in our programs and use them to create meaningful change in their communities.
