Do you have a green thumb? Join the Friends of Governors Island and the Trust for Governors Island horticulture team to care for the natural landscapes through a hands-on volunteer project. With over 120 acres of open space and a small gardening team, volunteers provide invaluable support as we strive to create biodiverse and beautiful environments for both humans and wildlife to enjoy. We appreciate your help!

Opportunity Details:
Date - Wednesday January 25th
Time - 8:30am to 11:45am
Location - Hammock Grove

Volunteers will mulch pathways and play areas in Hammock Grove, the urban forest central to Governors Island. This past season, our horticulture team has created over 400 feet of new pathways in Hammock Grove, offering visitors the opportunity to escape under the tree canopy and explore the Island's biodiversity even closer. Join Leo, Gardener at the Trust for Governors Island, to learn about the horticulture team's work to expand native plant communities on Governors Island, while contributing directly to the care and maintenance of our urban forest.

No gardening experience is necessary. Gloves, tools, and supplies will be provided to all volunteers.

Mission Statement

The Friends of Governors Island is an independent nonprofit that works to ensure the Island’s continued growth and accessibility as a vibrant public resource. As the designated fundraising partner of the Trust for Governors Island and the National Park Service, the Friends stewards the Island’s green spaces, enhances the visitor experience and builds a community dedicated to the Island’s future. Our core activities include running Governors Island’s visitor services and volunteer programs; raising funds to care for the park’s landscapes, expand public access, and create more free programming; and advocating to ensure Governors Island remains a shared space for all.

Description

The Friends of Governors Island was founded in 1995 as the Governors Island Alliance to advocate for the return of Governors Island to the people of New York. The organization’s goal of redeveloping the former military base as a great civic space was the basis for the 2003 transfer of the Island from the Federal Government to New York and the National Park Service. The Governors Island Alliance became an independent nonprofit in late 2014 and changed its name to the Friends of Governors Island in 2016.
