Volunteer to be a one-on-one ESL (English as a Second Language) tutor!

Save to Favorites

Goodwill of Southwestern PA and partner organization Literacy Pittsburgh are looking for individuals who enjoy helping others to make an impact in the immigrant community by tutoring an adult immigrant (or small group of adult immigrants) in English language skills. Having experience learning another language or having teaching experience is very helpful, but not required. Goodwill and Literacy Pgh are partner organizations that offer English as a Second Language classes; however, Literacy Pittsburgh also offers one-on-one tutoring. Goodwill occasionally gets new students who turn out to need one-on-one for various reasons. Sometimes it's because their unique needs cannot be met in a group class. Sometimes it is because their reading level is very different from their speaking level, and it would be difficult for them to thrive in a group class. We transfer those students to Literacy Pittsburgh, and we'd like to help with finding tutors for them. After meeting with Goodwill to discuss possible student matches, you would be transferred to Literacy Pittsburgh for their Tutor Training, which consists of two separate meetings: one about teaching adults, and the other about teaching English to adult immigrants. You'll receive a training calendar and can choose dates that work for you. Upon completion of training, you'd receive books and materials selected for your specific student or small group based on their goals, needs, and level of English. You'd meet with your student or group 2x weekly, for about 3-4 hours per week. Time off during vacations and holidays is of course acceptable. They ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months as it does take some time to help an ADULT student make progress with a new language. Tutoring could be in-person or online, depending on what you and the student wish to do. Volunteers should have, or be working toward, a bachelor’s degree in any field, and a desire to help adult students achieve their educational goals! An interest in the subject matter is always a plus! Those interested can contact Trisha Powell, Education Volunteer Recruiter by text at 412-498-0412 or by email at trisha.powell@goodwillswpa.org

  • About 4 hours per week (flexible to your schedule), and vacations/holidays off are of course fine. A six-month commitment is preferred, as it takes time for an ADULT to make progress in learning another language :)
  • You would take a two-part Tutor Training before receiving learning materials for your specific student or students. It's also preferred to provide a copy of your four-year (or higher) degree.
