At Harbor Hospice, we not only take great care of our patients but also their families. This is extended to our families long after they've lost their loved one through our bereavement program.

As part of this program, we call our grieving families at both 6 months and 12 months after the death. These calls are simply to check in to see how they're doing. This is also an opportunity to see if they'd like our chaplain to contact them for support or to offer further resources.

We provide the training and guidance on how to make these calls. I provide you with all of the pertinent information including the obituary (if I can locate it). I want you to be able to have a sense of who the person was so when you call, you're fully prepared. We may have 10-12 calls a month each for the 6 month and 12 month bereavement calls (20-24+ total). We have other volunteers that will split this with you. There is no minimum or maximum number of calls required.

I hope you will consider helping out our bereaved families. It's imperative that we check in to make sure how things are going. Grief is different for everyone, and a friendly phone call can go a long way.
