Tutors work one-on-one with their students at least one hour a week, usually in the local libraries in Chatham, in Gretna or at other locations in the county. Some tutors choose to work with inmates in the local jail on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. The program also has 2 adult basic education satellite centers to accommodate persons in the Southern and Northern areas of the county. These centers utilize churches in Brosville on Monday evenings and in Pittsville on Saturday mornings. Tutors can specify to work with Reading, Math, Spelling, GED preparation, or all subjects. Student/tutor materials are supplied as well as tutor training. Some students are older citizens who want to learn to read to their grandchildren or to read the Bible. Other students are younger adults who did not graduate from high school and need to improve their literacy skills in order to obtain employment or their GED. Basic computer instruction is available at the Pittsville site. The program also provides books to the local Head Start Program and the Chatham Boys and Girls Club. Readers are needed for Head Start. We occasionally read to the Head Start children to promote literacy at an early age. Tutoring is an extremely rewarding volunteer opportunity!
