Position Overview:

Help people to become US citizens! Citizenship classes are offered once a week and we want to provide tools and knowledge needed to pass the citizenship exam with Citizenship Mock Interviews.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate one-hour mock interviews at the library
  • Encourage students in their efforts and be a positive role model
  • Review students' citizenship mock interview and provide appropriate feedback
  • Be punctual and professional in class
  • Keep attendance records
  • Attend training by library staff and maintain ongoing communication with Citizenship Class Coordinator.

Training/Support Available:

  • Orientation and training from library staff
  • Access to library resources and citizenship materials
  • Continued staff guidance and support throughout the entire series of classes.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Age 18 or older
  • Ability to speak, write and read English with proficiency
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese preferred
  • U.S. Citizen, through birth or naturalization
  • Strong ambition to serve the community
  • Knowledge of citizenship resources preferred
  • Prior tutoring or teaching experience preferred
  • Good person-to-person skills: dependable, prompt, patient and flexible, respectful, able to maintain confidentiality
  • A willingness to be open to other cultures and ways of thinking
  • Basic computer skills
  • Fingerprint clearance required (SJPL will covers the cost)

Commitment:

  • Meet regularly with staff to assess the program (at least once a week)
  • Commitment of one-hour weekly citizenship mock interview for a period of 6 months, unless otherwise negotiated in advance.

Day available to volunteer: Wednesdays from 4-5pm
