Join ProduceGood for their Grocery Gleaning program! ProduceGood partners with Jimbo's stores in San Diego to be able to sort through their unsellable produce - produce which is perfectly edible, but is not able to be sold due to cosmetic issues, partially damaged packaging, or the item being past its peak ripeness period. This sorted produce, which would otherwise be going to landfills or compost, is then transported to local agencies, where that food will be distributed to community members in need.

At Jimbo's Escondido, volunteers will arrive and meet at the back of the store, where Jimbo's staff will bring out the items that they are unable to sell in store. Volunteers will go through each item, and will inspect and sort them. They will compost the food waste that is unable to be donated, and then will track and weigh the food that will be donated. Afterwards, one volunteer will drive the rescued produce (100-300 lbs typically) to an Escondido partner agency, where the produce will be distributed to community members facing food insecurity. Volunteers must be willing and able to transport the rescued produce 10-15 minutes away to a local agency.

Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

Signing Up: Finish your registration for this opportunity by signing up for the corresponding "Jimbo's Grocery Gleaning - Escondido" shift on ProduceGood's VolunteerHub page and filling out their required online volunteer waiver.

Attire: Closed toe shoes, comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty

Bring: Water bottle, hat

Physical Requirements: Bending, standing for the duration, and lifting at least 20 lbs. Unfortunately this opportunity is not able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations.
