Teaching the history, sport, and art of swordsmanship to all, with safety and fun.

The Sword Conservatory is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) organization, which serves the community by teaching a variety of historical martial arts (i.e. swordfighting) and sport fencing classes through Holly Springs (NC) Parks & Recreation. We are in need of volunteers to assist teaching our weekly classes.

If you have a willingness to learn and are comfortable helping out with small-group lessons, then we can teach you the specific skills. A background in martial arts or fencing is not required, though it is certainly helpful.

The classes that we teach:
Medieval sword fighting, ages 8+
Medieval sword fighting, adults (age 16+)
Fencing Through the ages (ages 10+): This class spans Pirate, Renaissance, and Scottish historical styles, as well as modern sport fencing (foil, saber, epee).

Mission Statement

Teaching the history, sport, and art of swordsmanship to all, with safety and fun.

Description

We teach sword fighting in a safe, supportive, and fun atmosphere! Weekly classes are taught on Medieval martial arts, Pirate & 18th century swordsmanship, and modern sport fencing. We use real historical techniques with modern safety, offering styles and intensity levels for all abilities and interests, for adults and children 8 years and older.

Medieval classes teach a variety of swords & shield styles, as well as dagger, staff, pike, and unarmed. Beginner and intermediate classes use foam weapons with safety masks, while the most advanced class uses plastic and steel weapons with full armor (ages 18+ for that!).

Pirate & 18th century classes cover maritime cutlass, Renassaince rapier, small sword, Scottish basket-hilted broadsword, and saber. Off-handed weapons, such as a parrying dagger, cloak, and buckler are taught to advanced students. Standard fencing equipment is utilized, with some additional protective equipment.

Sport fencing classes teach the standard weapons: foil, saber, and epee.

Besides weekly classes, we also do demonstrations and teaching at festivals, museums, schools, and civic organizations. We are a regular participant in the Carolina Renaissance Festival, Fraser's Ridge Homecoming, Festival of Legends, Greenville, SC Scottish Games, Beaufort Pirate Invasion, and Swansboro Pirate Fest. We have demonstrated at the North Carolina History Museum, North Carolina Transportation Museum, and many local schools.
