Future City Colorado still needs judges and volunteers for the Regional this year - Essays, Model, Presentation and Q&A.

Future City is a STEM-centric competition for middle schoolers. The 2023-24 Future City theme is Electrify Your Future. Students are asked to design a 100% electrically powered city with energy generated from sources that keep their citizens and the environment healthy and safe. Last year Future City Colorado reached 1,700 Students, 42 Educators and 81 Mentors, Judges, and Volunteers.

Early January

Regional Competition Judge:

City Essay - no more than 1500 words. Essays will be available early January and judging is due January 12th. 5-10 hours (virtual) Using a provided rubric, you will evaluate 1,500-word essays that describe teams’ future cities as well as their solutions to this year’s challenge. You will have 5 essays.

Saturday 20th, January 2024 - Colorado School of Mines - Green Center

Regional Competition Judge:

Model and City Presentation/Q&A - Teams present a 7-minute talk about their future city and their solution to the challenge. Their model will also be judged at the same time.

In person - 8 am check in.

Using provided rubrics, you can evaluate the students’ scale model of their city, and their oral presentation/Q&A about their city and solutions to this year’s challenge.

Registration is available online at https://futurecity.org/register. Make sure you select the Colorado Region. Day of Judges - we will be scoring electronically. Bring your laptop. You will log in to your Future City Account using the School of Mines Secure Internet.

Mission Statement

1. Increase interest in math and science among middle school students. 2. Teach students how to use engineering to solve real world problems, and to consider a range of perspectives and values associated with problem solving. 3. Help students appreciate the extent of the engineering that goes into a city. 4. Teach the value of project planning and teamwork, and increase self-confidence. 5. Stimulate imagination, creativity, and self-confidence among students through STE(A)M-related learning. 6. Raise understanding of the collaborative and multi-disciplinary approach necessary to the design of cities.

Description

Future City ( www.futurecity.org) is a flexible, project-based learning experience that is open to students in grades 6, 7, and 8 who are from the same school or home school environment, or are members of a nationally, regionally, or state-recognized youth focused organization. The program starts in early Fall and finishes in January at the regional competition. Future City is a national program run by DiscoverE. Future City Colorado is your local region of the national Future City program. We are looking for volunteers to judge the deliverables and also volunteer on the day of competition on January 21st, 2023 at the Colorado School of Mines. This will be in-person.

This year, teams will address climate change. They are expected to choose a climate change impact and design one innovative and futuristic climate change adaptation and one mitigation strategy to keep their residents healthy and safe.

There are 5 major deliverables that need to be judged prior to the regional or at the regional on Saturday January 21st, 2023. Registration is available online at https://futurecity.org/register. Make sure you select the Colorado Region.
