Volunteers get to make their own schedule!
Our Non-medical Hospice Direct Care Volunteer provides support to patients living with a terminal illness, in addition to their caregivers and family. Support is provided in a variety of ways, including companionship, socialization, and caregiver relief. There is no medical background needed - our Hospice volunteers do not interact with the patient in any medical or personal hygiene capacity (i.e., volunteers do not give baths, get the patient in/out of bed, or to/from the bathroom, give medication).
Some examples of what a Direct Care Volunteer could do:
- Provide companionship
- Socialization and/or support to hospice patients and their families/caregivers
- Reading to the patient
- Playing games
- Writing letters to or on behalf of the patient
- Assisting with light household duties (watering plants, walking pets, washing dishes, emptying and taking out the garbage, etc.
- Music therapy
- Massage Therapy (license required)
- Pet Therapy (license required)
- Hair stylist (license required)
Volunteers make their own schedule! We do ask for about 4 hours per month. More time is always accepted.

Hospice is about living. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death, but rather it affirms life, emphasizes dignity, and enhances the quality of the remainder of a person's life. Hospice adds life to days at a time when days can no longer be added to life.
Hospice treats the person, not the disease... focusses on family and friends not just the individual... and emphasizes the quality of life, not the duration.
Hospice is a program of palliative and supportive services that provide physical, psychological, social, and spiritual care for terminally ill persons and their families. It is a comprehensive, medically directed, team-oriented program that accentuates pain control and symptom management for patients who no longer respond to routine aggressive medical care. The focus of hospice care is palliative rather than curative in nature. We need volunteers in ALL areas that we cover in and around the Kearney areas.

- With the initial onboarding process you will need to be TB tested. We will cover the costs. You will also need to provide 3 references and pass a background check. We will provide the training. No experience necessary.
