MFTA depends on volunteers to help prepare donated materials for distribution to over 4200New York City public schools, nonprofit arts groups, art therapy and community service programs throughout New York’s 5 boroughs.  The tasks assigned vary, depending on what the daily needs are in the warehouse.  Projects consist of sorting and shelving donations, bundling and folding fabric, cleaning and dusting.  The most common needs sorting and shelving donations

  • 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
  • 12:15 PM to 02:15 PM
  • 02:30 PM to 04:30 PM

Mission Statement

Materials for the Arts collects unneeded items from businesses and individuals, and make these donations available for free to its recipients: nonprofit organizations with arts programming, government agencies, and public schools. The MFTA warehouse is operated by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs with additional support from the City's Departments of Sanitation and of Education. Friends of Materials for the Arts, in collaboration with the City of New York and the creative community, is the nonprofit strategic partner that guides and supports educational programming, warehouse operations, and other initiatives of Materials for the Arts.

Description

MFTA Volunteers engage in a wide variety of activities and gain valuable experience as they work in our offices, classrooms, and warehouse serving NYC’s municipal agencies, public schools, arts organizations and nonprofits.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 16
  • Mondays: 10am-5pm, Tuesdays 3pm-5pm, Wednesdays: 10am-5pm, Fridays: 10am-5pm
  • Some tasks may require heavy lifting, climbing a ladder, extended standing time, working as a team, folding large pieces of fabric, stocking rolls of fabric, organizing shelving for compact stocking.
