The Mentoring Project is seeking panelists to participate in our next Zoom Career Panel which is Tuesday, January 10 from 7:00-8:00pm. The audience will primarily be community college students studying business management. Are you a young professional (within ten years of college graduation) in a business-related career like HR, Marketing or project management, operations management, leadership, financial management? You could work in any number of fields such as: culinary arts, hospitality, agriculture, aviation, systems administration, health care or technology. Ideally, your background reflects that of the BIPOC students we serve and you started your education at a community college and transferred.
P anelists will talk about 1) How your education prepared you for your position, 2) What you do in your position and 3) Advice you have for college students interested in pursuing your career. Most of the students viewing the panel will be enrolled in a community college Bachelors in Management program. TRIO and other community college students will also be attending.
In addition to, or instead of serving as a panelist, we are also seeking short-term career advisors to meet virtually (3x) with individual community college students interested in your field. For either volunteer position please sign up at https://www.mentoringproject.org/mentor-application.
The mission of The Mentoring Project (TMP) is to increase postsecondary degree completion of marginalized student populations. The Mentoring Project pairs trained community volunteer mentors with adult low-income college students to provide guidance as they navigate their path to postsecondary degree or certificate completion. The program primarily supports BIPOC community college students. All programming and mentoring is conducted on-line using Zoom and other electronic methods. The Mentoring Project is a non-profit (501)(c)(3).

Mission Statement
The Mentoring Project pairs trained community volunteer mentors with adult low-income students to provide guidance as they navigate their path to postsecondary degree or certificate completion. The 1:1 relationship, conducted on-line, aims to create stability for the student through regular check-ins, good listening and supporting the student’s belief in their capacity to problem solve.
Description
The Mentoring Project is a new program, in partnership with the Seattle Colleges, aimed at improving retention of low-income students. Currently, over half of all students starting at the Seattle Colleges (North, South & Central) will not complete their degree or certificate. Mentors will connect virtually (e.g. by text, email or video conferencing like Zoom) with their mentee once a week to provide support and encouragement to overcome obstacles to degree completion such as food insecurity, lack of funding and confusion about academic direction. This is a great opportunity to do rewarding volunteer work without a huge time commitment- here are some bonuses: Monthly mentor trainings will feature experts in the field who will share their student affairs knowledge and engage in discussion. Topics will include how to advise students about:
- Financial aid, grants and college affordability.
- Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
- Leveraging campus activities and services.
