Inland Seas Education Association has a mission of fostering Great Lakes stewardship, curiosity, and passion. We accomplish this mission through a variety of hands-on programs that immerse participants in some part of Great Lakes Science. A number of these programs take place on traditionally rigged schooners! No experience is necessary. We are happy to train you!
Crew members are needed for Spring and Fall Schoolship programs as well as our general public programming during the summer. Programs range from two to four hours each and vary throughout the day. Training will begin in spring for interested individuals. No prior experience is needed.
As a crew member volunteer, you will:
· Work alongside the captain to provide safe programs on board the ship
· Interact with participants as they raise the anchor, hoist the sails, and enjoy the trip
· Maneuver on the deck of a moving vessel in any weather
· Ascend and descend ladders
· Need to lift at least 50 pounds
· Be expected to pass a criminal background check and Department of Transportation drug screen
If you are interested in becoming a crew member volunteer or have any questions, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Rachel Ratliff at (231) 271-3077 ext. 106 or rratliff@schoolship.org.

- The programs themselves range from 2 - 4 hours. Training is about an 8hour commitment in March & April (on-land) and then ongoing throughout the season (you choose your shifts!)
- There is no MINIMUM number of hours to be a member of our Tallship crew. More time onboard does equate to faster skill development and confidence, but we have ample opportunity for newer sailors to gain skill over time.
