Program Summary: 2Life is looking for a volunteer to teach a weekly fitness class for residents at our Newton Campus(es)! For older adults, exercise is an essential activity that has a profound impact on the quality of their life. Fitness classes consist of 5 segments: a warm up, balance component, free hand weights, cardio, and a cool down. The goal is to improve aerobic capacity, flexibility, and muscle strength. For residents who are frail or compromised there is the option to exercise seated in chairs.
Key responsibilities:
- Memorize and learn the exercise class routine. Volunteers would shadow fitness staff to be trained.
- Facilitate and teach the fitness class independently
- Take attendance
- Assist residents with proper form
Impact Goal: Physical activity is one of the most important things 2Life residents can do for their health. It helps improve strength and balance to keep doing your day to day activities, and prevents or delays diseases. For many, fitness activities and health workshops are also opportunities to reduce social isolation.
Qualifications:
- Must have some background in fitness
- Interest in teaching classes
- Comfortable working with older adults
- Sociable and engaging
- Bilingual in Russian, Mandarin, or Cantonese preferred, but not required
Schedule/Time Commitment: Flexible schedule -- looking for just 1 hour per week during business hours (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm). Volunteer must commit to at least 2 months and keep a regular schedule.
Benefits: Obtain experience working with older adults while exercising yourself! Gain experience teaching fitness classes to a group.

Mission Statement
Empowering older adults to live with purpose and dignity. At 2Life our mission is to ensure that all seniors have the opportunity to thrive regardless of their income level or background.
Description
2Life Communities, a nonprofit organization founded in 1965, operates on the belief that all seniors should have the opportunity to live a full life of connection and purpose in a dynamic, supportive environment - a model we call aging in community, which directly combats the growing public health crisis of social isolation and loneliness amongst older adults. 2Life is a senior housing developer, owner, operator, and advocate, with residents at the center of everything we do.
At 2Life Communities, residents can step out the doors of their own apartments and find friendship, community, physical and intellectual stimulation, and a helping hand day or night. Serving a diverse population of 1,800 older adults, 2Life creates communities with a laser sharp focus on affordability - a tremendous concern given that Massachusetts is the state with the 2nd largest gap in the U.S. between seniors’ median income and the cost of living.
