ORGANIZATION: Boston Debate League

JP Morgan

  • What is your role?
    • The Boston Debate League hosts debate tournaments for young people from Boston to debate federal policy topics in either English or Spanish. At tournaments, volunteers partake as judges in debate rounds. Judges listen to debate rounds, provide valuable feedback, and determine a winner. Debate builds confidence, academic skills, intellectual curiosity and creativity. You can make sure that young people in Boston have the opportunity to debate, support their growth, and affirm the idea that young people have important ideas to contribute to society by serving as a Volunteer Judge.
  • How do you get trained?
    • Everyone is welcome to serve: no debate experience is necessary to be a great judge. New volunteers will be required to watch our New Volunteer Judge Training video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4UabAG8b0s), which is approximately 30 minutes. We will also require new volunteers to attend an in-person training that is built into the volunteer shift.
  • What do you need to do before your first shift?
    • Volunteers should also plan to complete our Volunteer Judge Sign-Up Form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScB9LL-r3fdvysQMDKr4YKWIgLsvD-r8t2OQlE3En6-lOTviw/viewform?usp=sf_link) to help the BDL place you within the tournament and an eCORI form (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sbrupGnoQ2UanHZXj45PsOhstC_BT284vBmCxoX1T08/edit). Both are required.
    • Feel free to review the Pre-Tournament Check-List for Debate Judges (https://docs.google.com/document/d/13N24S6tTHCFeE_aqe952e6x_hDtkl3Q7G9bIXfjzQnw/edit?userstoinvite=susankpetrole@gmail.com). The list details all of the things volunteers need to have done prior to the tournament.
    • All debates will be held in-person. You will receive a more detailed logistical email closer to the dates of the tournaments.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to integrate argumentation and competitive debate into public schools in Boston to develop critical thinkers ready for college, career, and engagement with the world around them.

Description

The Boston Debate League (BDL) is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with the Boston Public Schools (BPS) to support academic debate teams in local high schools and train BPS teachers to use debate as a regular part of their classroom practice. We offer debate and argumentation programs for young people in Greater Boston, with a commitment to serving students of color and other students who have been denied these educational opportunities. We tailor our programs to address the educational inequities they experience, and strive to create inclusive learning communities where all participants are welcome and supported in achieving the transformative, lifelong benefits of debate.
