PURPOSE

NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group is a free, peer-led support group for any adult who has experienced symptoms of a mental health condition. You will gain insight from hearing the challenges and successes of others, and the groups are led by trained leaders who've been there.

NAMI’s support groups are unique because they follow a structured model to ensure you and others in the group have an opportunity to be heard and to get what you need.

  • Free of cost to participants
  • Designed for adults (18+) with mental health conditions
  • Led by people with mental health conditions
  • 90 minutes long and meets weekly, every other week or monthly (varies by location)
  • No specific medical therapy or treatment is endorsed
  • Confidential

LOCATION: NAMI Connection Groups are held virtually and throughout Geauga County, when public health circumstances permit.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS:

Requirements of a NAMI Connection Support Group Facilitator:

  • Must be an individual with a mental health diagnosis who identifies themselves in recovery
  • Willingness to undergo 2-day NAMI Connection Support Group model training
  • Maintaining fidelity of the NAMI Connection Support Group model is required
  • Commitment to facilitate support groups for a minimum of one year
  • Ability to provide group participant data as required with the support of NAMI Affiliate
  • Willingness to identify potential new facilitators from their support groups
  • Positive regard for, or personal experience with mutual support
  • Be or become a member of NAMI

After being trained in the NAMI Connection model, graduates may lead the following groups if they identify as part of the target demographic:

  • Peer Wellness & Recovery Support Group
  • Black Minds Matter Support Group
  • LGBTQ+ Support Group
  • Morning Check-in Group
  • Night Owl Open Discussion Group
  • Off Campus College Student Group
  • Regaining Our Sense of Self Group
  • Veteran’s Support Group
  • Women’s Support Group
  • Youth Support Group

VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Respectfully and effectively facilitate Family Support Group in accordance with the NAMI Family Support Group curriculum and instruction model.
  2. Assist with completing/collecting program evaluation forms from audience members as needed; ensure that program evaluations are delivered to NAMI Geauga County staff in a timely manner.
  3. Maintain a high level of energy and enthusiasm for NAMI and NAMI Geauga’s mission and purpose.
  4. Conduct volunteer work in a manner that aligned with NAMI Geauga County’s mission and consistent with the organization’s policies.
  5. Demonstrate a positive, professional demeanor with NAMI Geauga County’s community partners, staff, and other volunteers at all times.
  6. Respect, relate to and represent the interests of persons with mental illness and their family members.
  7. Respect the values, norms and customs of diverse populations and cultures.

  1. Recognize and respect the expectation not to act on NAMI Geauga County’s behalf or represent NAMI Geauga County’s outside the scope of the role requirements/volunteer responsibilities of a Peer to Peer Teacher volunteer, as outlined in this volunteer position description.
  2. Successfully complete volunteer trainings, including refresher trainings, recertification courses, etc., in a timely manner.

National Alliance on Mental Illness is America's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and familes affected by mental illness such as major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder.

Founded in 1979, NAMI has become the nation's voice on mental illness, a national organization including NAMI organizations in every state and in over 1200 local communities across the country who join together to meet the NAMI mission.

NAMI provides free educational programs and support groups for individuals living with mental illness and families/friends. Additionally, NAMI organizes educational events in schools and the local community.
