AmeriCorps VISTA is a federal program that mobilizes volunteers in the spirit of service across the nation. As an AmeriCorps member in the VISTA program, you will support an organization to make sustainable change in areas that effect poverty, including education, public health, climate, access to benefits, and more. Through activities such as fundraising, grant writing, research, and volunteer recruitment, you will gain professional experience and leadership skills. This opportunity prepares you for a life of service in the public, private, or nonprofit sector.
Goal of the Overall VISTA Project: The KSU Food Forest VISTA will have a sustainability emphasis and will help build the capacity of the KSU Food Forest Developers to address the issue of food security and educate students and the community about public health issues surrounding food insecurity. This service will include the development and maintenance of the KSU Food Forest site and other projects at the KSU Field Station. This role is a full-time, year-long opportunity.
Member Duties:
- The KSU Food Forest VISTA will conduct research and create outreach materials in the following interrelated areas, for the purpose of developing and sharing related educational materials with the KSU community: small-scale regenerative gardening, hunger, and food security, with a particular focus on Atlanta, and protecting pollinators in Georgia.
- The KSU Food Forest VISTA will create materials and manage the KSU Food Forest social media outlets (Instagram, the KSU Food Forest YouTube channel, websites)
- The KSU Food Forest VISTA will be given experience with regenerative agriculture through service at the KSU Field Station
- The KSU Food Forest VISTA may be asked to participate in the installation of a food forest project in an Atlanta-based community
- Engage in educational tours and public speaking opportunities to promote the work of the Food Forest and Field Station
