Wycombe Museum and our volunteers

Volunteers are a vital and valued part of the Wycombe Museum family. We value every skill that people bring and every minute that people give to us, and endeavour to have every volunteer feel appreciated and enjoy the time they spend helping us. We strive to have a relationship with our volunteers based on mutual respect and understanding.

As a Learning Volunteer you will be assisting our formal and informal schools programme and learning activities.

Based on half or whole day sessions, a typical day in this role may include:

  • Welcoming schools to Wycombe Museum
  • Leading event activities with school age children; this is focused on Early Years/Foundation Stage to KS3, but may be focused occasionally on older groups
  • Support informal learning and engagement events, school visits and family activities
  • Helping to interpret handling collection objects through discussion and discovery
  • Assisting with role play, storytelling and dressing up activities
  • Assisting with setting up and packing away furniture and equipment
  • Assisting with trails both in and around the museum and also the town

To do this role you will need:

  • An enthusiasm for learning and working with young people
  • Ability to manage groups of children with the support of the Learning Officer and schools’ staff
  • An open and friendly attitude that is resilient and flexible

Learning shifts vary depending on the event being held. This can usually be anytime between 10- 3pm on a weekday, with the majority taking place on Thursday and Friday. Learning Volunteers will be regularly emailed with events that need support and volunteers can put themselves forward to support if they wish.

Who would be supporting me?

The Learning and Engagement Officer, Victoria Stevens, will be your main point of contact. On a daily basis, the Duty Manager and our staff and volunteers will be helping you. Full training in session content will be provided. Details of the current learning programme may be found on our website.

Where and when would I be volunteering?

Volunteers will be based at Wycombe Museum located on Priory Avenue, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, HP13 6PX. Most sessions will take place in the museum on a Thursday and Friday, but may also take place on any day in schools or in the case of walking trails, the town centre.

What is Wycombe Museum looking for?

We are looking for a friendly, respectful and enthusiastic person who is comfortable working with large groups of children under the age of 16 and who is happy to earn new skills.

What skills and qualifications do I need?

All you need is enthusiasm and a willingness to learn!
