MLCS's mission is to build an equitable community by uplifting and supporting families, promoting community health, and nurturing resident and youth leadership and creativity. We do this through a variety of services including adult education & ESOL, youth programming around steam/stem, family services, food distribution, and housing support.
After 3 years of our kids (ages 7-12) makerspace being shut down due to the pandemic, we're so excited to be re-launching our robust afterschool programming. The space is open for kids from 3:30pm-7pm, Monday through Thursday. The first hour is typically used for completing homework. We're looking for volunteers to come in for an hour and a half from 4:00-5:30 to support kids with whatever support they need academically. Volunteers are also welcome to stay after homework help and support youth facilitators with scheduled programming.
Folks who have previous experience working with kids in an urban community setting are encouraged to sign up!

Description
MLCS is in the heart of a housing development where families live in subsidized units for over a decade on average. We watch babies become toddlers; toddlers become children; children become teens; and teens become adults. We have the opportunity to reach people at every turn. MLCS leverages this access by providing age-appropriate programming to help people break through learned barriers to build 21st century skills.
We Support:
- School-aged children under 12: MLCS encourages smarter media and digital consumption in a staffed makerspace and tech lab. Through Maverick Makers, staff help children to develop a curiosity for learning with STEAM-based activities in a maker space for young learners.
- Teens: MLCS employs a positive youth development and mentoring approach to build life skills and reengage youth in the possibilities of their future. Maverick Maker teens work and lead in the makerspace with kids and also work on product and program design and they are actively learning and using the design process with support from in-house designers and makers.
- Adulthood: Supporting 21st century workforce development through a partnership with New Bostonians that makes possible English Innovations, a technology-infused English as a Second Language program as well as a partnership with Boston Career Connections a 21st century workforce development program.
