Sierra Club is working to boost our impact during the 2023 state legislative session by recruiting and supporting knowledgeable, effective advocates like you who will take the lead on developing a relationship and communicating with their state legislator about important environmental priorities.

How? You will join a small team of volunteers from your legislative district in directly lobbying your representative or senator in the Washington State Legislature. In the process, you will develop a relationship with the legislator and help establish the local importance and relevance of the Sierra Club's legislative agenda. You will be the constituent face of the Sierra Club for your legislator.

Why is this important? Repeated contact at the district level with your legislators can result in major improvements in their voting records and ensure environmental issues are prioritized in Olympia.

How will you be supported? The Washington State Chapter will help by giving you the latest information on a regular basis to stay informed on the issues, including materials and technical assistance to help you understand legislative issues and process, and a virtual training before the legislative session to help you feel fully prepared for meetings with legislators. You’ll also be invited to participate in periodic calls, email threads, and actions with chapter staff and volunteer leaders throughout the legislative session.

What is your commitment?

  • Training : Attend a 2-3 hour online training in late October/early November (TBD), where you’ll learn about Sierra Club’s priority issues, talking points, and lobbying best practices.
  • Hold Meetings : Coordinating with your district team, reach out to legislators to request individual meetings with your State Senator and two State Representatives (either virtual or in-person) before session starts in January.
  • Report Back : Report back what commitments the legislator made, if any, and how our issues and talking points were received.
  • Represent the Sierra Club : You’ll be the Sierra Club’s representative to your legislator. This means you will need to represent all of our Sierra Club priorities. If your personal values or positions conflict with any of our priorities, please let us know up front.
  • Follow-Up: Communicate with your legislator by phone, email, or social media as needed during the upcoming legislative session (January-April 2023).

What are Sierra Club’s state legislative priorities? Our volunteer Legislative Committee is still working to finalize 2023 priorities, but we’ll likely be engaged on issues related to protecting state lands and legacy forests, salmon recovery, housing affordability, and urban growth management. You’ll receive a full briefing on these priorities at our training session.
