Did you know that over 70,000 adults in Guilford County struggle with basic literacy skills? Literacy is a fundamental skill that affects all areas of a person's life. Not being able to read and/or write in English hinders one's ability to get a job, thrive in a career, seek proper healthcare, and engage with their community. Reading Connections exists to support these individuals in reaching their literacy goals. We can’t do it without dedicated volunteers who work with students one-on-one and in small groups to improve their reading, writing, speaking, listening, math, technology, and employability skills.
We are seeking dedicated in-person class assistants to help facilitate our adult literacy classes. Training and resources are provided for all class assistants.
Responsibilities:
- Take attendance
- Facilitate class procedures and instruction
- Oversee class WhatsApp group, if needed
- Substitute teach if needed
- Support with preparing lesson slides if needed
- Use the Zoom whiteboard
Requirements:
- Must complete a volunteer application form
- Must attend one orientation session on Zoom
- Must complete a one-hour, online, self-paced training
Training: Prospective class assistants are required to complete a 2-hour training before being matched with a class. The training is designed to address the specific strategies and issues relevant to adult learning and the intake process and will prepare you to be able to substitute if needed. We offer free monthly training sessions.
Time Commitment: 2-4 hours per week for six months
Qualifications:
- Enthusiastic about reading, writing, and the English language
- Patient with students
If you're interested in making a life-long impact on adults seeking literacy instruction, this is the opportunity for you! Please email our Volunteer Coordinator, Quaneisha Payne, at qpayne@readingconnections.org for more information.
