Now is the time to act: Stop the Addiction Fatality Epidemic!

Nearly 108,000 Americans lost their lives to overdoses in 2021. This is the highest number of Americans lost to overdoses ever recorded.

Fatal and nonfatal overdoses surged in the early months of the pandemic, and are on track to increase. To overcome the addiction epidemic, it requires our collective action. That’s why SAFE Project works collaboratively to bring solutions to communities, campuses, workplaces, and active-duty service members, veterans, and their families.

Please help SAFE Project end addiction by turning hope into action.

Stories

"The only way to normalize talking about addiction and mental health challenges, is to talk about addiction and mental health challenges. Our 19-year old son Jonathan lost his battle, but his story will help us win this war. Just as every veteran who unlocks their vault and shares their story will help us inspire action to help our veterans succeed. We must continue to fight and build resources necessary to help prevent and overcome addiction. Join us as we Unlock the Vault together and support our military families who are willing to share their stories. We are all in this together."

- Admiral James A. "Sandy" Winnefeld, Jr

At SAFE Project, we encourage you to share your story about how the addiction epidemic has impacted your life. Stories can help break the stigma around addiction, and they empower us all to take a positive stand against this national crisis, at home and in our communities. When your loved one is struggling with a substance use disorder, the emotional and physical consequences can seem overwhelming. Not only can the effects negatively impact their own health, but also the health and well-being of their friends and family. This can lead to feelings of isolation, hopelessness, and despair.

We hope these stories help you and others feel less alone, while connecting people to a community of those who have experienced similar struggles and hardships while facing the addiction epidemic.

Share your story with us by becoming a volunteer.

*All stories can be submitted anonymously and we will never publish anything without your permission.*

SAFE Project’s Volunteer Program gives community members, families, friends, and others a tangible way to serve, contribute their skills and experiences to a meaningful cause, and to help overcome the opioid and addiction epidemic in the United States.

Location:

Mission Statement

To contribute in a tangible way to overcoming the addiction epidemic in the United States.

Description

SAFE Project was founded in November 2017 by Admiral James and Mary Winnefeld, following the loss of their 19-year old son Jonathan to an accidental opioid overdose. Read more about Jonathan Winnefeld.

The Winnefelds immediately channeled their grief into action, hoping to save more families from the pain of loss. Whether it was seeking treatment, getting answers, or understanding the nature of the disease - they knew there needed to be a different solution to help other families facing the same journey with substance use disorder.

They swiftly built our SAFE Project team of experts who strive for meaningful action through our programs, and lead efforts that are unifying, non-partisan and evidence-based. SAFE seeks meaningful metrics that strengthen our interdependent six lines of operation, and ultimately aim to achieve SAFE Communities, SAFE Campuses, SAFE Workplaces and SAFE Veterans across the nation.
