Volunteer Friends Needed to Welcome Asylum Seekers in the South Bronx!

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Bowery Residents' Committee, Inc.

BRC

As one of New York City’s largest non-profit agencies serving the unhoused and those at risk of becoming homeless, BRC has now been tasked with helping legal asylum seekers that have suddenly found themselves relocated to a city without any support system, many of whom are here without family or friends. While we will continue to do our best to help them get on their feet, we look to our community to assist us in this important moment. This is a critical moment to welcome our new guests and show them true New York City values through kindness, smiles, and fellowship.

BRC is currently looking for Spanish-speaking bilingual volunteers who are willing to make a regular, ongoing commitment. You would be tasked to play cards and games, chat, be casual, provide local community information from your own perspective, and, of course, provide translation and advocacy services with staff as needed. We simply need your assistance to make folks feel welcome and understand we are all here to help.

Location:

131 West 25th Street, 12th floor, New York, NY 10001, US

Mission Statement

Helping people reclaim lives lost: We restore hope and dignity by offering opportunities for health and self-sufficiency.

Description

BRC: Helping People to Reclaim Lives Lost. BRC is a leading provider of housing and services to thousands of New York City's individuals in need. Offering a hand-up, not a handout, BRC asks one simple question: What can we do for you? BRC sees the potential in each individual it serves and provides each the opportunity to find it. Whatever our clients may seek, BRC has it, 24/7/365: outreach to homeless people living in public spaces, drug treatment, mental health care, comprehensive medical services, vocational services, and supportive communities in which to live. BRC succeeds by building trust with the people we serve; listening, and then acting, providing housing - both temporary and permanent. Building trust takes time, and a compassionate, dedicated staff of almost 1,000 employees and 1,000+ volunteers that persevere 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, never giving up.
