Do you have a vehicle and a couple hours to spend with friends or family (kid-friendly!) doing contact-free pick up or drop offs? Volunteers accepted for 1 day or both days!

Pittsburgh Restaurant Workers Aid is collaborating with several local groups to collect supplies to our neighbors and offer help for those facing financial insecurity. With your help in distributing and picking up Collection items, we’ll be able to provide much needed supplies-from household items to hygiene products-to neighbors around the region. Here’s what you need to know:

What you’d be doing:

On Wednesday, Oct 19, we’ll go around residential areas (close to Bloomfield) dropping off empty bags at neighbors’ doors. Those bags will have flyers attached which explain the nature of the Supply Drive-listing items being requested or ways to get help if needed, as well as instructions to fill the bag and leave it outside on Sunday. On Sunday, we’ll go back to the same streets to look for bags that have been filled.

WEDNESDAY DROP OFF SHIFT:

  • Between 12-6p on Wednesday Oct 19, you’ll arrive at 4610 Liberty Ave, 15224 in Bloomfield at the Pittsburgh Restaurant Workers Aid Distro. You can park for free on the side or behind the building. We’ll provide you with the flyered bags and maps.
  • You’ll head to your map area and go door-to-door dropping the bags. Please make sure the bag is secure and the flyer is visible and won’t blow away. Hanging them on door handles, inside screen doors, or under floor mats are often the best options. Never put anything inside a mailbox.
  • If you are unable to distribute all of your bags, feel free to return them to the Bloomfield Distro or go out again the next day, if you’re able. Either way, let us know so we have a count of how many bags were distributed and head home when you're ready.

SATURDAY PICK UP SHIFT:

3 days after dropping off empty bags on porches with a list of Supply Drive items being requested or ways to ask for assistance and instructions to leave any donations on their porch on Sunday, April 3, your job is to find and retrieve any bags that have been filled. Think of it as a Scavenger Hunt!

How you’ll do it:

  • We’ll text or email you a map or street list of houses that were canvassed. You’ll go to those addresses and look for bags left on the porch. Only take bags that are labeled "Mutual Aid" or clearly left for our Supply Drive. Some households will put out multiple bags/boxes.
  • It can be a fun game for kids to run ahead to find the bags or carry them to the sidewalk. Having two adults means one person can keep the car close by while another collects the bags, so bring a friend or the whole family, but it's also easy enough to do alone or ask us to pair you up!
  • Once you’ve searched your entire map area, bring everything to the Pittsburgh Restaurant Workers Aid Food Distro at 4610 Liberty Ave, 15224 in Bloomfield .

Don't have a vehicle? Sign up to help with sorting on Saturday, Oct 22 at 4pm!

About PITTSBURGH RESTAURANT WORKERS AID

Location:

4610 LIBERTY AVE FLOOR 1, PITTSBURGH, PA 15224, US

Mission Statement

Pittsburgh Restaurant Workers Aid provides resources and community support to restaurant and hospitality workers who have lost financial, housing, food, and healthcare security. PRWA was built as a direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 and immediately connected restaurant workers from across the county to address the needs of workers in our industry.

Description

In March of 2020, when restaurants first faced COVID restrictions, we recognized an immediate crisis. Many low income workers in our industry lacked financial security and could not safety access necessary resources, such as food. In less than 72 hours, our group created a delivery system to provide grocery items, diapers, pet food, cleaning supplies, and other donated products to impacted workers across Allegheny County. Since the creation of our Distribution Center, we have assisted over 1,500 individual households in Allegheny County and surrounding counties.

Even though restaurant workers comprise about 10% of the workforce in the United States, we currently make up 70% of the unemployed population in this country. PRWA understands the effects of the pandemic on our industry, and we hope to address resource gaps using outreach, direct aid response, and advocacy.
