Roosevelt University is currently seeking an English Tutor for the TRiO, Upward Bound 3 program. Upward Bound is a federally funded program that provides services designed to improve academic, career, and personal skills to prepare first-generation (neither parent has a four-year degree) and low-income high school students to be successful in high school and college. The RU Upward Bound 3 program serves CPS students, grades 9-12.

The English Tutor will provide individual and group tutoring services to high school students in-person at the Upward Bound office at Roosevelt University. The tutor will work with students to achieve a better understanding of English + Writing and to develop the study skills necessary for academic success. Schedules are flexible, but normally hours are between 3:30 and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Candidates for this position must have expertise in English, writing, or a related field. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred. The candidate must also have experience tutoring and/or teaching upper-level high school courses with knowledge in approaches to teaching writing, grammar, and textual analysis. In addition, candidates must have excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population.

  • Background Check
  • Ideally, tutors will volunteer on the same day each week, so that students have a consistent support structure. Pre-covid, we had tutors working 1-2 days per week, for approximately 2 hours per session.
  • We're looking for tutors with experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, such as low-income and first generation college students.
