About Ice Theatre of New York

62 Chelsea Piers Suite 308, New York, NY 10011, US

Mission Statement

Founded in 1984 by Moira North, Ice Theatre of New York has changed the face of figure skating by creating works that integrate the sensibilities of contemporary dance, music and art challenging the perceptions and conventional definitions of figure skating. Its mission is to elevate dance on ice as a performance art. Through its performances in both traditional and site-specific venues, ITNY presents ice dance that opens ones eyes to seeing skating in unexpected ways. ITNY was the first ice dance company to receive dance program funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Ice Theatre of New York is an extraordinary organization, which has, for more than 20 years, changed the face of figure skating, by integrating the sensibilities of the contemporary dance, music and art worlds into performance skating.

In addition to pioneering skating as a performing art, Ice Theatre has also developed diverse performance programs to develop ensemble skaters and educational outreach programs to teach the basics of skating and develop new audiences for dancing on ice.
Outreach programs include the Lunchtime Concert Series at Rockefeller Plaza, and after-work Ice Concerts at Bryant Park, both free to the public: New Works and Young Artists Series at Riverbank State Park, dedicated to presenting present new works and providing free skating clinics for public school students from Harlem and Washington Heights.
"Institutions like [Ice Theatre] are responsible for giving New York City the unparalleled artistic and cultural spirit that has made it the envy of the world."
Vartan Gregorian, President of The Carnegie Corporation of New York, June 2007
"Moira North has succeeded in establishing ice dance as a serious art form, in part by attracting grants to support leading modern dance choreographers...Some pieces seem like they would be perfectly at home, at say, Jacob's Pillow."
Jenny Hansell, from "Learning How to Dance on Ice. A New Art" in Millerton News, April 2007

"Jacqulyn Buglisi, of Buglisi Dance, calls skating 'another art in the world of movement.' 'I thought it was very interesting to try to bring my knowledge of movement through the Graham technique (to the ice). It was an investigation of the creative process.'"
Lois Elfman, from "Fluid Movement" in Dance International Magazine, Winter 2006
