Recruiting Organization: Institute for Research on Male Supremacism

The Institute for Research on Male Supremacism (IRMS) is seeking applicants to join our volunteer, working board of directors to lead and support our organization.

WHO WE ARE

Male supremacist ideology is the belief in cisgender men’s superiority and right to dominate, control, or erase "others": cis and trans women, trans men, and non-binary and gender-nonconforming people. IRMS supports a community of researchers committed to exposing and challenging common narratives that uphold male supremacist ideology. Our research draws on intersectionality and reproductive justice frameworks in emphasizing the intersections of misogyny and transmisogyny with other axes of oppression, such as racism, xenophobia, antisemitism, and heterosexism. Our fellows’ and mentees’ work spans a range of topics, from misogynist incel ideology and mass violence; to anti-trans organizing; to rape culture, Title IX, and men's rights activists; to racist misogyny and violence toward Black women and Asian women. We emphasize structural change, shifting discourse toward investing in longer-term solutions such as comprehensive consent-based sexuality education and organizing at the local and state levels.

Since our incorporation as a non-profit in 2020, we have pursued this mission determinedly and expanded our programming. This year, our core initiatives include:

  • The Training Institute on Anti-Supremacist Organizing;
  • The Conference on Supremacism and Authoritarianism;
  • Public webinars that present research and bring together experts for panels on current events in male supremacism;
  • Support for organizers, including trainings and direct advisory relationships with social justice organizations;
  • Publishing reports and research on male supremacism;
  • Community-building, networking, and research support for our fellows and mentees.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are seeking individuals who are passionate about our mission. No previous board experience is required. We believe a diverse board is a better board; we encourage applicants from historically and systemically marginalized backgrounds and communities to apply, especially women of color and trans women.

We are a working board. This means, in addition to overseeing the operations of the organization, board members carry out the board’s directives. A working board is a transitional stage as a mostly volunteer nonprofit builds sustainable support. This article provides more details on working boards.

As a working board, there is ample opportunity for board members to contribute and build their experience and background in a range of areas, including in:

  • Fundraising
  • Activism and organizing
  • Non-profit administration or media law
  • Finance

These specific needs are in addition to overseeing our mission, strategy, and programmatic work to challenge misogyny and transmisogyny and advance an intersectional feminist vision.

EXPECTATIONS

We are looking for individuals to join our volunteer working board who will:

  • Prepare for and attend monthly (virtual) board meetings;
  • Actively participate in at least one sub-committee (Fundraising, Organizing, Fellowship/Mentorship Programs, Communications, Finance, Nominations);
  • Work with other board members in contributing to program development and content creation in support of the IRMS mission;
  • Work between board meetings to support goals of organization (e.g., reviewing grant proposals, developing mentorship curriculum, etc).

We estimate board members will spend 5-10 hours per month on their board commitments. Board members serve a two-year term.
