ORGANIZATION: Families USA

  • 7 people are interested

Families USA is seeking two committed Board Members to serve on its governing body. The Board of Directors supports the work of the organization and provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations of the organization are led by the Executive Director, the Board-Executive Director relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

The Board Member's responsibilities include advising on strategy and communications and participating in evaluations and monitoring of the organization’s program and financial affairs. A successful Board Member should have significant professional leadership experience, strong diplomatic skills and be passionately committed to Families USA’s mission.

We believe an organization is best able to do this work effectively and with authenticity when its Board and staff are diverse, inclusive and equity focused.

Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

Leadership, Governance and Oversight

  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization, fully engage in identifying partnerships to advance Families USA’s mission and represent Families USA to stakeholders.
  • Ensure strong fiduciary oversight and financial management, including approval of Families USA’s annual budget, audit reports and material business decisions.
  • Contribute to the development of policies and plans.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director to help develop and implement Families USA’s strategic plan.
  • Assess the Board’s own performance as the governing body of the organization, evaluating the organization’s outcomes and metrics.
  • Contribute to an annual performance review of the Executive Director.
  • Assist in identifying, recruiting and approving other Board Members.
  • Ensure Families USA’s commitment to a diverse Board and staff that reflects the communities it serves.
  • Serve on committees and take on special assignments.
  • Review agendas and supporting materials prior to Board and committee meetings.
  • Adhere to the organization’s bylaws, policies and Board resolutions.
Term and Participation Expectations

Families USA Board members are elected for a three-year term and are eligible for re-appointment for one additional three-year term. Board meetings are held:

  • Three times per year: in January (around the annual Health Action Conference), in May and in the fall, either in September or October.
  • The May and fall meetings are usually held over two days.
  • Each Board meeting includes a casual Board dinner the night before the meeting.

Board Members are expected to attend Board meetings and participate actively and conscientiously, keep up with issues and trends that affect the organization and maintain confidentiality on all internal organizational affairs. Service on Families USA’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for two individuals who are passionate about Families USA’s mission and who have a proven track record of Board leadership. Selected Board members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy or the nonprofit sector.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments.
  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating and building consensus among diverse individuals.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and a passion for improving the lives of Families USA’s beneficiaries.
  • Previous board experience preferred.

In addition, for this recruitment priority will be placed on candidates who bring one or more of these specific substantive areas of expertise and experience: Children’s Health Policy, Health Care Payment and Delivery System Reform, Health Equity, Nonprofit Financial Management, Reproductive Health and Strategic Communications.

Submission Details

We encourage interested applicants to submit a one-page Letter of Interest, a resume and LinkedIn profile address to board@familiesusa.org. Applications received before Wednesday, October 5 will be given priority.
