We are an all-volunteer program looking for men and women who are handy around their own homes and willing to help older adults with small repairs. Our most common requests are for leaky faucets but requests can be just for extra help like putting a window air conditioner in when it gets hot. This is not remodeling or major repairs. Just tasks that older adults, on fixed incomes, can't afford to hire a contractor for. Can you hang a picture on the wall? Install a venetian blind? Change an overhead light bulb?
Most requests take an hour to complete. If you look it over and it's beyond your ability, that's fine. We'll refer them to a contractor.
Scheduling is flexible. We let you know what's needed and you set it up at your convenience.

Mission Statement
In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh (ISOS) and Open Your Heart to a Senior in Westmoreland County are programs of Wesley Family Services with a mission to maximize the independence of older adults in Allegheny County and Westmoreland County through practical volunteer-based supports.
Description
In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh and Open Your Heart to a Senior (OYHS) are part of an initiative of the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Seniors who need some extra support to live independently at home and feel connected to their community are matched with volunteers in their neighborhood.
Volunteers are able to have flexible/self-service scheduling which allows volunteers to view and select activities that they would like to do. Some of the activities available are grocery shopping for or with an older adult, providing rides to appointments, friendly visiting, helping a senior with low vision read their mail, and more! Some of our opportunities are suspended at this time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Please contact us for a current list of available opportunities.
In Allegheny County, we also offer Medicare counseling through our APPRISE program and home safety checks for seniors through the Safety for Seniors program.
