SCOTTDALE and MT. PLEASANT AREA. Safe drivers needed to drive older adults to medical appointments. Volunteers will greet clients at their residences, drive to medical appointments, read old magazines while waiting (optional - the reading, not the waiting), then return them home safely. Volunteers may offer a steady hand but older adults will be able to get in and out of the vehicle with minimal assistance. Must be able to fold and lift a walker/rollator into and out of their car. Gift of gab is optional, but a willing ear is most beneficial.
Scheduling is flexible. Medical appointments are mostly Monday - Friday but shopping requests can be scheduled on weekends or evenings. Most assignments are 2-3 hours in length - we're talking about doctor's appointments - so you never can be too sure! Assignments are made based on volunteers' availability. You can accept one a week or one a month, whatever your schedule permits.

Mission Statement
In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh (ISOS) and Open Your Heart to a Senior in Westmoreland County are programs of Wesley Family Services with a mission to maximize the independence of older adults in Allegheny County and Westmoreland County through practical volunteer-based supports.
Description
In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh and Open Your Heart to a Senior (OYHS) are part of an initiative of the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Seniors who need some extra support to live independently at home and feel connected to their community are matched with volunteers in their neighborhood.
Volunteers are able to have flexible/self-service scheduling which allows volunteers to view and select activities that they would like to do. Some of the activities available are grocery shopping for or with an older adult, providing rides to appointments, friendly visiting, helping a senior with low vision read their mail, and more! Some of our opportunities are suspended at this time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Please contact us for a current list of available opportunities.
In Allegheny County, we also offer Medicare counseling through our APPRISE program and home safety checks for seniors through the Safety for Seniors program.
