ORGANIZATION: Family Service Rochester

21 st Century Community Learning at Friendship Place is a student-centered initiative to meet student learning goals. The program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.

Volunteers provide hands-on assistance that offers students a broad array of academic support and enrichment, helping students to achieve, connect and thrive.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Tutor students based on individual needs and curriculum material
  • Fulfill scheduled commitment:
    • Regular tutor, usually weekly
    • Substitute tutor, commit to subbing at least every 4-6 weeks
  • Provide input/feedback to Program Coordinator

Volunteer Qualifications/Requirments:

  • Keen interest in students' education
  • Strong leadership skills under minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated patience and concern in working with children
  • Ability to commit to a schedule as a regular or substitute
  • Completed application and background check
  • Interview with Program Coordinator

Time Commitment:

  • 4-10 hours per month
  • Hours of Operation:
    • Tuesday:
      • 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.
      • 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
    • Wednesday:
      • 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.
      • 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
    • Thursday:
      • 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.
      • 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Description

Family Service Rochester (FSR) is a community-based, nonprofit organization that provides a wide range of services addressing mental health, child wellbeing, family stability, and senior independence.

FSR was founded in 1965 with a staff of three and the mission to support and enhance the dignity and quality of life for individuals and families in the community. From that small start-up offering counseling and homemaker services, the agency has grown to provide more than 30 programs to meet ever-changing community needs. Volunteers are vital to excellent service delivery to those individuals and families we work with.
