Want to help your local community while gaining valuable office experience and having time to work on your homework? Become a Reading Connections Office Intern!

Reading Connections is an adult and family literacy nonprofit that offers free literacy instruction to Guilford County residents. One in five adults in Guilford County struggles with literacy. Not being able to read and/or write in English hinders one's ability to get a job, thrive in a career, seek proper healthcare, and engage with their community. Reading Connections exists to support these individuals in reaching their literacy goals. We can't do it without dedicated volunteers like you who help facilitate our classes and office operations.

This opportunity is available at our High Point office, located on the second floor of the High Point Public library. The High Point Office Intern will be primarily responsible for manning the front desk, answering phone calls, fielding questions from walk-in volunteers and students, and watching over the office while in-person tutoring sessions are happening. This is an excellent opportunity to gain secretarial experience and support philanthropic literacy efforts in your local community, all while having the time to work on your homework. You will be assisted and trained by the High Point office staff. Our greatest desk coverage need is Wednesdays after 4 pm and Thursdays 1-5 pm.

In return for the volunteer hours, the benefits to the volunteer candidate may include: job reference letter from your immediate supervisor on the Reading Connections staff, experience gained while volunteering on various tasks, networking opportunities, and current resume entry. Most importantly, you will be a vital part of Reading Connections' work on providing adult literacy services to promote life changes.

Qualities and Skills:

The successful candidate must have/be the following:

  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and highly-organized
  • Intermediate computer skills
  • Reliability
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and commitment to professional ethics
  • Ability to work with a diverse population

Reading Connections is an equal opportunity employer and considers applicants for all positions without regard to race, color, religion, creed, gender, national origin, age, disability, marital or veteran status, sexual orientation, or any other legally protected status.

Please send a resume with cover letter to sjoyce@readingconnections.org, detailing why you are an ideal candidate for this position.
