Recruiting Organization: Baltimore City Department of Public Works

The Baltimore City Department of Public Works is seeking prospective candidates to serve as their Community Outreach & Volunteerism VISTAs as part of the ongoing AmeriCorps VISTA program.

Candidates should possess a minimum of HS diploma diploma, Bachelor's or Associate's degree preferred and/or a minimum of 3 years of work experience in volunteerism, research and data collection, computer graphics, customer service, social media marketing, and a strong commitment to excellence and economic empowerment and opportunity.

Members in this office will work to expand marketing and volunteerism to broaden support for DPW throughout Baltimore City, with a special emphasis on those from low-income communities to increase equity in our decision-making and outreach capabilities.

Throughout the year, VISTAs will perform research of and establish partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and consultants to compile an active agency list of volunteers, support, and resources. Members will also perform tasks to recruit and retain city employees and residents for volunteer opportunities, as well as develop goals and performance metrics to monitor, track, and measure effectiveness of marketing and volunteer initiatives. Lastly, members will engage low-income communities to better utilize DPW services by creating a variety of multi-media tools for our outreach campaign. These will include website and app updates, signage, daily social media posts, periodic town hall meetings and school presentations, radio and TV, and other educational marketing collateral that improve the visibility of DPW and promote community awareness, volunteerism, youth development and apprenticeship programs, as well as new DPW activities and projects.

DPW is seeking 2 candidates to fulfill the positions. Start dates will vary based on submission but ideally begin in October 2022. The positions will be full-time in person M-F, 8:30AM - 4:30PM.

Note that this is a volunteer position for the job site. VISTA members are essentially federal employees under AmeriCorps. The opportunity does provide job experience in the relevant fields at the job site and also comes with a bi-weekly stipend. The total amount of the stipend is about $16,200 for a full year of service (effective August 14, 2022). Other benefits of the position include health care coverage, choice of an additional cash stipend of $1,800 or the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award valued over $6,195 which can be used towards student loans or other educational expenses such as tuition, books, etc. Members will also receive non-competitive eligibility after completing a year of service, allowing them to be hired by a federal agency without competing with the general public so long as they meet minimal qualifications. More information about benefits are posted on the AmeriCorps website.

To formally apply, you must register to create an account at https://my.americorps.gov/mp/login.do and fill out the necessary information. Once completed, search Baltimore City Department of Public Works on listings and click on Community Outreach & Volunteerism VISTA to apply and be eligible for an interview. We will reach out to applicants between now and once the deadline (TBD) is reached.
