Making a Difference Foundation (MADF) alleviates poverty by focusing on improving access for the most vulnerable populations in Pierce County: home-bound elderly or individuals with disabilities in subsidized housing who cannot come to our food bank, Eloise’s Cooking Pot, and individuals who live in underserved communities across the county. The VISTA will reduce these barriers by developing a delivery system to provide food and non-food items, including hygiene supplies, household products, and pet food. The program will be available 5 days a week during varied hours at several locations in Tacoma, WA. The VISTA will build capacity by increasing the number of clients we serve to at least 3000 and manage 50 new volunteers.

Member Duties: In this capacity-building, indirect service position, you will develop, implement, and improve Making A Difference Foundation's systems for setting up and preparing deliveries out in the community and pickups at the food bank. You will identify new sites and events where the food bank can pop up and deliver services. You will also recruit, train, and mobilize volunteer delivery drivers, strengthening our volunteer management system. The core principles of all VISTA positions are 1) a focus on ending poverty 2) empowering the community 3) building long-term solutions, and 4) capacity building for an organization, rather than providing services directly to individuals in need. This position is part of a regional cohort - Greater South Sound VISTA, which provides professional development, connection to United Way and AmeriCorps networks, and a unique team experience.

Description

Greater South Sound VISTAs serve in the offices of our region’s public and nonprofit agencies, guided by the four Key Principles of VISTA Service: End Poverty, Build Capacity, Empower Communities, and Create Sustainable Solutions. Our Host Sites (the agencies hosting VISTAs) are spread across the Greater South Sound region, not only in Thurston County but also in Pierce, Thurston, Grays Harbor, Mason, Lewis, Jefferson, and Clallam Counties.

We’re looking for applicants of all ages, from all backgrounds, who are passionate about social justice and economic equity, self motivated, and team oriented. With VISTA, you choose where you submit your application - select the Host Sites that you’re the most passionate about. Each Host Site creates an individualized VISTA Assignment Description (VAD) to plan out the VISTA’s upcoming Year of Service, so each VISTA position is unique. Some VADs involve being out in the community regularly, whereas others might involve a lot of time in the office analyzing data or designing a website. Sample responsibilities listed in recent VADs include: developing trainings for food bank volunteers, revising policies for a shelter, creating a public awareness campaign to prevent human trafficking, writing grants for a free childcare program, and more.
